Soldier? Revolutionary? Patriot? Terrorist? The many ‘’heads’’ of Ladon Radim

Ladon

Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ He is the hundred-headed dragon, who is the son of Echidna ("She-Viper") and Typhon (Some versions say he is the son of Phorcys (A sea-god) and Ceto ("Sea Monster")). Ladon’s heads constantly spoke in many languages with a multitude of voices. Hera (Queen of the Gods) gave him the job of guarding the Garden of the Hesperides, which contained a tree that bore golden apples. The Hesperides (Nymphs of the Evening) raised Ladon, and also guarded the apples. The Garden was said to be in the west near Mt. Atlas or in the Arcadian Mountains of Greece. It was a beautiful grove surrounded by a high wall. He was killed by Hercules in the eleventh of his Twelve Labors (In another version, he was killed by Atlas). Ladon is associated with the constellation Draco. Compared to Tiamat. There was also a Ladon who was a Potamoi (River-God) and son of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys. His river is located in western Arcadia, and he is the father of Metope, Carmentis, and Thelpusa. Learn More: Theoi.com: Drakon Hesperios Dragon Constellation, Wikipedia - Draco, and SEDS: Draco. Also: Theoi.com: Potamoi and Theoi.com: Potamoi Ladon.
The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ Ladon Radim was a member of Commander Acastus Kolya’s Genii strike force and one of the soldiers who tried to seize Atlantis, during which he gained a basic understanding of the city’s sensor array (110/111 – The Storm/The Eye). He says that he has defected from the Genii and wants to trade a ZPM (that he stole from the Brotherhood) with SGA in exchange for weapons. He is planning a coup to become the leader of the Genii. He says that Cowen plans to use the Genii’s atomic weapons to enslave other worlds. He used an atomic bomb to kill Cowen and becomes the new leader of the Genii (217 – Coup D’Etat). After the Althosians are forced to leave the city by Helia, he offers an alliance with them (310 - The Return).

The Three Ambassadors, not as much fun as the Three Amigos

Langara

Geography/History ~ CANADA ~ Langara is a neighborhood in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia. It is also a College in Vancouver. From what I’ve read on the Internet, Langara College was a branch of Vancouver Community College, until it separated in April 1994. In addition to the latter two, it is also an island. Learn More: Langara College Home Page.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ P2S-4C3, the home planet of the continents of Kelowna, Terrania, and the Andari Federation, has been unified under the name Langara, as the word has its roots in the ancient dialect common to all three peoples and a symbol of their new unity. The Goa’uld Thanos once ruled the planet. The vein of Naquadria that runs beneath the continent of Kelowna has become volatile and threatens to destroy the planet. They currently have a fragile alliance with Earth (714 – Fallout). They fell to the Ori (1007 -- Counterstrike).

Latona The Sentinel

Latona

Myth ~ ANCIENT ROME ~ ("Hidden one") Latona is the Roman name for the Greek Goddess Leto. She was the daughter of Coeus ("Intelligent") and Phoebe ("Moon"), who were both Titans (the race of gods before the Olympians). Zeus (King of the Olympians) fell in love with Leto and was the father of her children, Artemis (See Kynthia) and Apollo. Hera, Zeus’ wife, was jealous of this fact and forbid Leto to give birth on either land or sea. Only the people of Delos would allow her to give birth on their island, which was floating. Leto, in return, secured the island to the bottom of the sea. She was primarily worshiped in Lycia (Asia Minor). In Egypt, she was equated to the goddess Wadjet and had a temple on the island of Buto (Khemmis).
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The Sentinel has protected the Latonans from Goa’uld invasion for 300 years; during this time they have technologically regressed, which means they have forgotten how to fix their technology. On one of the NID’s scavenging sprees, Colonel Grieves and Lieutenant Kershaw took apart and reassembled the Sentinel to study it. While they were doing that, they killed the Caretaker of the Sentinel. Later Svarog attacks Latona and demands that the Latonans worship him and become his slaves. SG-1 travels to this planet to attempt fix the Sentinel and repair diplomatic relations. In order to save the Latonans, Grieves sacrifices himself, becoming the Caretaker and enabling the Sentinel. He, Kershaw, Svarog’s ship, and all of Svarog’s Jaffa disappear from the planet in a white flash of light emitted by the Sentinel (520 – The Sentinel).

Leda

Leda

Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ She is the beautiful daughter of King Thestius of Aetolia & Eurythemis, and the sister of Iphiclus. She became Queen of Sparta when she married Tyndareus. Zeus, who visited her in the form of a swan, seduced her. It is said that she laid two eggs. One contained the children of Zeus (Helen of Troy and Pollux) and the other contained the children of husband (Castor and Clytemnestra). Helen of Troy and Pollux (also known as Polydeuces) were semi-divine, and Castor and Clytemnestra were mortal. Castor and Pollux were known as the Dioscuri. With her husband, she is also the mother of Timandra, Philonoe, and Phoebe. Some versions of the myth say that Nemesis is actually Helen’s mother (with Zeus still being the father), and that the goddess abandoned the egg containing Helen. A shepherd found the egg and gave it to Leda, who claimed the child as her own. Leda is said to have died of shame from Helen’s actions. In modern times, Leda is the name of Jupiter’s ninth moon and 38 Leda is an asteroid.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ A native of the Rand Protectorate, she is the wife of Jared Kane, the chief aide of Commander Gareth. She cares for Daniel after he is wounded in the battle between the Rand Protectorate and Caledonian Federation (Also see Avidan) (805 – Icon). She died from the Ori plague 5 months ago (See Ethon) (915 -- Ethon).

Beam me up Scottie, er...Quetzalcoatl! Arthur's Mantle

Lepton

Science ~ PHYSICS ~ (From the Greek word meaning "small" or "thin," a Lepton is the Greek version on the Penny or Pence [1/100]) As an elementary particle (has no smaller particles or substructure), a lepton is one of the basic building blocks of matter. Leptons are also Fermion (particles with half-integer spin). It is also not affected by strong nuclear force (interaction between quarks and gluons according to quantum chromodynamics (QCD)). Lepton come in three varieties (or flavors): electron (lightweight fundamental subatomic particle with a negative electric charge), muon (a semistable fundamental particle with negative electric charge), and tau (a negatively charged elementary particle with a lifetime of 3x10−13 seconds). There are also corresponding neutrinos (A particle with no charge and almost no mass) to the three flavors. Usually when particles interact, "the number of leptons of the same type (electrons and electron neutrinos, muons and muon neutrinos, tau leptons and tau neutrinos) remains the same (qtd. Wikipedia)." As for "Lepton Radiation," the only thing I could find was that muons make up more than half of the cosmic radiation at sea level. Learn more (and get a headache): Wikipedia – Lepton.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ A crystal skull discovered on P7X-377, used Lepton Radiation to transport people to another phase dimension (321 -- Crystal Skull). SG-1 found the "Mantle of Arthur" (Also known as Merlin’s Computer) was emitting trace amounts of Lepton radiation. Merlin used the Device to "Cloak" his weapon research from the other Ancients (918 -- Arthur’s Mantle).

Dr. Levant

Levant

History ~ MIDDLE EAST ~ This name is taken from the French word lever ("to rise," as in sunrise, eluding to the East). It is also called Mashriq (from the Arabic ‘al-mashriq, "The Land Where the Sun Rises," or "The Land in the East."). However, this term is not often used in the Middle East (It is more often combined with the term "Maghreb" which is used to denote the Arab/Berber countries west of Egypt). This term was used historically to denote the countries that are situated on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. During the Crusades, the term was used by Venetian merchants who traded with cities such as Tyre and Sidon (both in southern Lebanon). Later, the term was used to denote the coast of Asia Minor and Syria and sometimes referencing the area from Greece to Egypt. The term "Levant" also came to be used to denote Anatolia (Turkey), the Middle East, or the Near East. After World War I, the name "Levant States" was used to refer to the countries of Syria and Lebanon. In addition, it has also been known to denote the area of Israel/Palestine. See Hebron.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Dr. Levant was the name of the "Daniel" character on the Wormhole X-treme! series. Dr. Levant’s character was played by a character named Raymond Gunne (get it? ray-gun?!) (512 – Wormhole X-treme!).

Linea Ke'ra

Linea

Language/Science ~ SPAIN ~ Línea is the feminine Spanish word for "line." ~ SWENDEN ~ Carl Von Linné (also Carolus Linnaeus) (b. 23 May 1707 -- d. 10 Jan. 1778). He was a botanist and explorer who created the unified system for defining, classifying, and naming organisms. This system is known now as Scientific Names (Genus species). The Linea flower, also known as the twinflower, is small pink (or blue) flower and named after the Swedish botanist (and was his favorite flower). The original meaning of the surname is "Lime Tree."
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Linea, or the "Destroyer of Worlds," is a woman SG-1 first met on the planet of Hadante (Stargate Designation P3X-775), which is a prison colony. Linea was responsible for a planetary plague. She helped SG-1 escape and then escaped from the SGC by sabotaging the computers, hence hiding the Stargate destination she went to (203 – Prisoners). Linea then went to the planet Vyus, where she was experimenting on Dargol Gas. The experiment backfired and caused the Vorlix. It caused an instant fountain of youth for the entire population, but it also had an unforeseen side-affect of the loss of all their memories before the Vorlix. Ke’ra (Linea) helped the SGC find the remedy for the memory loss. She remains on Vyus, as the harmless Ke’ra, to help with the Vyus transitional government as the Minister of Health, Science, and Restructuring (311 – Past and Present).

Linear A

Linear A

Language ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ Originally discovered on the island of Crete in the city of Knossos, the first tablets and seal stones with examples of Linear A and Linear B languages were found by archaeologist Arthur Evans. With the discoveries of more examples of Linear B found on the Grecian mainland and Crete, Michael Ventris deciphered Linear B in 1952. He found that the writing system was a form of archaic Greek, used by the Minoans and Mycenaeans. He also found that Linear B had 89 phonetic characters. The Linear A language has not yet been deciphered for not enough tablets with examples of the script have been found. Go here for further information: Omniglot: Linear A Script and Kairatos: Linear A, Linear B.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The writing on the base of Pellops’ statue, on the planet Argos, was Linear A. Teal’c recognized it as originating with the Goa’uld (108 – Brief Candle).

He is a member of the Aesir, but at the same time he is their enemy. He is very handsome and appears to be friendly, but at the same time, he is sly and vindictive. His baneful deeds are credited to the fact that his mother, Laufey, and his father, Farbauti ("Cruel Striker"), were giants. Loki’s first wife was Glut, with whom he fathered Eisa and Einmyria. His second wife is Sigyn. He also has a mistress, the giantess Angrboda, with whom he fathered three monsters. As a result of all the pranks and the murder of Balder, the God of Light, he was tied to a rock beneath the dribbling mouth of a venomous snake (Sigyn stayed loyal to him through this ordeal). Each time a drop of venom would hit his head, he would seize in pain, causing earthquakes. He would be released at Ragnarok, when he would lead the Army of Evil against the Aesir in the final battle where Heimdall would kill him. O’Neill to do genetic experiments, because the Asgard believe that O’Neill is the next stage in human evolution. However, Loki was discovered when the O’Neill-Clone he left behind as a decoy malfunctioned and was stuck in the teenage years. Thor arrives and tells SG-1 that in order to try to solve the Asgard’s fatal cloning problem, Loki has long studied human evolution. However, 19 years ago, the Asgard ordered that Loki stop his experiments until the get the Replicator problem under control. Loki started doing unsanctioned experiments and was convicted of and punished for this crime (703 – Fragile Balance). Due to their incurable degeneration disease, he dies in the mass suicide of the Asgard explosion of Orilla (1020 – Unending).

Lotan

Lotan

Myth ~ ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA ~ A pre-biblical ancient West Semitic deity; also called Leviathan (from the Hebrew: Livyatan and represented as a hydra-like dragon or serpent) and Yamm in the Western Semitic stories (also called: Yam (Hebrew translation: "Sea"). In West Semitic mythology, he ruled the lakes, oceans, rivers, and underground springs. In Jewish mythology, he was a primordial sea serpent. Myths recorded on tablets discovered at the city of Ugarit (in modern Syria), say that at the beginning of time, he was made the king of the gods by El (translation of Semitic: "God." He was the chief deity of the West Semites and father of all the other gods [except for Baal]. Equivalent of Cronus). Lotan/Yamm asked that the gods surrender Baal to be a bond servant to him. El complied with this request but Baal refused. A battle between Lotan/Yamm and Baal ensued. Lotan/Yamm was slain by Baal, who became king. Leviathan appears in the Old Testament books: Psalms 74:14, Isaiah 27:1, and Job 41:1.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Lotan is a cyborg created by the Gadmeer spaceship. He is created in the image of the Enkaran people (See Eliam) to be better equipped to explain to them why the Gadmeer need the planet P5S-381 (409 – Scorched Earth).

Lourdes

Lourdes Maylay

History ~ FRANCE ~ Lourdes is a town located in the First Pyrenean foothills, southwest of the Hautes-Pyrénées department. Originally called Lapurda by the Romans, it didn’t become notable until the 600s with the escalation of conflicts between the Moors (Northern African/Berber or Spanish Muslims) and Carolingians (a Frankish Dynasty). The Moors built a fortified castle at Lourdes, and in 778, Charlemagne attacked. However the Moors, led by Mirat the Saracen, were able to repel the Carolingians even though they had run out of food. The legend says that a giant eagle flew over the castle and dropped a large trout for Mirat. He showed it to Charlemagne to try to trick him into thinking that they had plenty of supplies. Charlemagne was about to give up when Turpin, the Bishop of Puy-en-Velay, asked Charlemagne if he could speak to Mirat. He asked Mirat to surrender to the Queen of the Sky instead of Charlemagne, to which he agreed. Mirat pledged himself to the Black Virgin of Puy, converted to Christianity, and took the baptismal name of Lorus (which later evolved into Lourdes). Lourdes is best known for the visions of Bernadette Soubirous. She had 18 visions from February to July of 1858. She was the daughter of a poor miller, and at the time of the visions, she could only speak Occitan, and was unable to speak, read, or write French. Her first vision was on February 11, when she was out gathering firewood at the Grotto of Massabielle. When Bernadette entered the Grotto, she saw a lady dressed in white. In the majority of the visions, the Lady told her that everyone needed to pray for sinners. In the fourth vision, the Lady told her that the priests needed to build a Chapel at the Grotto. The Lady also told Bernadette three secrets, which she asked Bernadette never to tell. In the ninth vision, the Lady told Bernadette the location of the spring, which she had to dig from the mud. The Lady continued to ask for a chapel to be built. Fr. Peyramale tells Bernadette to find out the Lady’s name and to have her make the rosebush in the Grotto bloom. The Lady finally told Bernadette her name in the sixteenth vision: Que soy era Immaculada Conceptiou, "I am the Immaculate Conception." However, the rosebush did not bloom. Fr. Peyramale did not believe it, because the church had only given Mary the title "Immaculate Conception" four years previous. This information was not yet widely known and would have been especially unknown to Bernadette, since she only knew Occitan not French or Latin, and was just beginning religion classes. Bernadette later became a nun. It is said the Grotto’s spring water cured her asthma, however, she didn’t go to the spring when she contracted tuberculosis. After her death, her body was found to be incorruptible (meaning it didn’t decompose) and she was made a saint. – Maylay may be a play on words with melee... a violent, confusing hand-to-hand, free-for-all fight. Learn More: Catholic Association – Lourdes and Official Site.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Lourdes Maylay is a member of the Council Security Detail on P4M-328. Instead of sending medical personal to help the injured hostages, he sends in undercover police. He is replaced by Quartus (1016 – Bad Guys).
